The Future of Domantas Sabonis

During his exit interview the Indiana Pacers’ Center/Power Forward Domantas Sabonis told General Manager Kevin Pritchard that he wants a bigger role next season. Pritchard stated that this will happen. What does this mean for the future of the Indiana Pacers? Here are a couple of possibilities:

Sabonis wants a bigger role. In my eyes that means he wants a starting role next season. If he stays on the Pacers that means either Thad Young or Myles Turner is gone. I do not see the Pacers trading away their defensive anchor, and newly contract-extended, Turner, so it has become a real possibility that Young will not be retained in Free Agency. This sucks because Young is such a good leader in the locker room and a great player. I would love to see Young come back as the backup Power Forward behind Sabonis. In reality, however, as much as Young loves Indiana I believe that he still wants to start in this league.

With all of that being said, I like the idea of a Turner/Sabonis starting front court, but there is always a need for improvement. Sabonis for most of the season was the Pacers’ most consistent player, but to be a Power Forward in this league today you have to have a consistent jump shot. Specifically, Sabonis needs to work on his three point shot. He needs to be able to stretch the floor so that the lane does not get clogged up.

The other realistic possibility that I see is that Sabonis is traded away, so that he can have a bigger role. I do not like this option as I would like to keep both Sabonis and Turner together for as long as possible. As we get more into the offseason I will explore possible trade options for Sabonis that would benefit both.

I believe that Sabonis is going to stay a Pacer and that Thad Young is going to be moving on to a new team. As much as I like Young, he probably only has a few more years left in his career while Sabonis has an entire career ahead of him. In the end the Pacers should keep Sabonis and Myles Turner together as long as possible.
