My Favorite Time of Year

The Colts have not been over the top active in free agency the last couple of years, but that doesn't matter a bit to me. I LOVE NFL FREE AGENCY. The first day of the new league year is quickly approaching (it's Wednesday) and I cannot wait. The signings have already started trickling in as Trent Brown has already agreed to sign with the Raiders and things will just be more and more active in the coming days. This is when teams think they are prepping for a run and more often than not they flame out and are stuck with owing Albert Haynesworth $100 million.
I don't look for the Colts to overspend, but they will spend. Free agency over the last two years have brought the Colts a few building blocks that have infused the roster with talent while allowing our young guys to develop. Margus Hunt, Denico Autry, Eric Ebron, and others have helped the Colts transition from the horrifically bad Ryan Grigson era.
I do look for the Colts to continue the trend of looking for younger guys or underused guys who have shown flashes (think Autry/Ebron). I also see Chris Ballard looking more towards the skill positions (think receiver/corner). I think the draft will be huge for continuing to build the lines.
I have been open about wanting Trey Flowers, Dante Fowler (resigned with the Rams on Sunday), Tyrell Williams among others. I don't want Flowers for the expected $17 million per year he will likely receive. I also don't want to pay Williams $12+ million per year. It just seems unwise. I do, however want Landon Collins if he can be had for the right price, but I also want Clayton Geathers to stay with horseshoe.
There are a few spots where the Colts need help. They need an edge rusher, receiver, corner, defensive tackle (?), safety (?), and need to continue building depth while resigning guys like Pierre Desir and Clayton Geathers. I don't look for the Colts to fill all their gaps via free agency, but I think safety, corner, and receiver are prime spots to be fixed in free agency. I like Landon Collins (Grigson should have picked him over Dorsett), but I wouldn't be mad if the Colts resigned Geathers and picked up another cheap veteran (Antoine Bethea?). I love Steven Nelson at corner, he would be a great fit in Indy and was one of the few bright spots in Kansas City's defensive backfield last year. I also love Tyrell Williams due to his size and potential. I think defensive line help and depth will both come in the form of draft picks but I've been wrong before.
This is my favorite time of year because the league completely changes during this time period. Some teams spend big to revamp their roster, some teams stand pat and I can't wait to see which my team does (probably somewhere in between).
In Ballard We Trust.
